The Vitreoscillaceae; a family of colourless, gliding, filamentous organisms.
نویسنده
چکیده
A new family, the Vitreoscillaceae, is proposed for a group of microorganisms which are characterized by their colourless, gliding trichomes. The family has certain affinities with myxobacteria and still more with colourless myxophyceae, especially with the Beggiatoaceae. Two genera, Vitreoscilla and Microscilla and seven species are described, three species tentatively referred to Vitreoscilla, two to Microscilla, and two other genera are provisionally named.

Isolation of Herpetosiphon giganteus and Ultrastructure Analysis by Electron Microscopy
Herpetosiphon giganteus is a filamentous gliding bacterium. Gliding motility is the movement of the cells over surfaces without the aid of flagella. The mechanism responsible for bacterial gliding motility has not been known and there are only a few data on Herpetosiphon giganteus. The aim of this study was to observe the ultrastructure and negative staining of isolated strains of Herpetosiphon...
متن کاملIdentification of filamentous algae of the Balikhli River in the Ardabil Province and four new species records for algal flora of Iran
Algae are the most important group of organisms which considerably affect the water quality. Although algae constitute one of the fundamental parts of the aquatic food chains, only few researches deal with the freshwater algae of Iran. Filamentous algae are important components of the river vegetation. The Balikhlou River is utilized as a source to obtain drinking water for the city of Ardabil,...
متن کاملNanoscale visualization of a fibrillar array in the cell wall of filamentous cyanobacteria and its implications for gliding motility.
Many filamentous cyanobacteria are motile by gliding, which requires attachment to a surface. There are two main theories to explain the mechanism of gliding. According to the first, the filament is pushed forward by small waves that pass along the cell surface. In the second, gliding is powered by the extrusion of slime through pores surrounding each cell septum. We have previously shown that ...
متن کاملComplete genome sequence of the filamentous gliding predatory bacterium Herpetosiphon aurantiacus type strain (114-95T)
Herpetosiphon aurantiacus Holt and Lewin 1968 is the type species of the genus Herpetosiphon, which in turn is the type genus of the family Herpetosiphonaceae, type family of the order Herpetosiphonales in the phylum Chloroflexi. H. aurantiacus cells are organized in filaments which can rapidly glide. The species is of interest not only because of its rather isolated position in the tree of lif...
متن کاملModeling Filamentous Cyanobacteria Reveals the Advantages of Long and Fast Trichomes for Optimizing Light Exposure
Cyanobacteria form a very large and diverse phylum of prokaryotes that perform oxygenic photosynthesis. Many species of cyanobacteria live colonially in long trichomes of hundreds to thousands of cells. Of the filamentous species, many are also motile, gliding along their long axis, and display photomovement, by which a trichome modulates its gliding according to the incident light. The latter ...
